Ancillary Tasks Research (Magazine Advert)

For our ancillary tasks, we have chosen to create a magazine advert and a CD cover. The reason for these choices is due to the fact that we created a music magazine during our last coursework project and we are planning to bring our skills to this project and improve on them. Also, the CD cover intrigued us as it is the best way to really represent the music video project and we are also aware of many album covers, therefore know the conventions. In terms of our magazine advert, we are designing ours to feature in a pop/gossip magazine, such as 'Teen Now', therefore it is direct to our target audience.Below are the existing magazine adverts we have looked at.

Magazines Adverts (Pop genre)

  • Uses the same image as seen on the album therefore providing a sense of synergy
  • Provided conventions by presenting songs that are included on the album and label logos at the bottom
  • Colour scheme in simplistic, however, not particularly eye catching. The image is more the main attraction

  • Again, this advertisement is very simple, yet provided the reader with all the information that they need
  • The colour scheme only follows three colours, but the red does stand out a lot. This may be something we could follow.
  • Again, the image is there to show the product itself, as it shows what the product is like.

  • The whole album cover has been extended to cover the whole space, there is no added room, as seen in the two above
  • The tag lines follow the same font and colour scheme as seen in the actual album cover
  • It goes against traditional magazine conventions because it is a white background but links to the album cover which has a white background
  • The name of the album is very small in comparison to other to the typical magazine advert and puts more focus on the main picture

  • This image does not seem to be an advert, but more of a poster. This is due to the fact that the tag lines, such as 'pre order the album' are almost seen in the form of credits. This adds emphasis onto the actual image.
  • The bubble writing it unfilled, thus using the bright colours to fill it, almost saying that the title perfectly describes the album
  • The album name is bigger that the band name. This may be something we chose to use.

  • Similar to the first two, it has an image of the artist and it perfectly shows the actual album cover.
  • The white background at the bottom of the image almost appears as if it part of the actual album cover, which is something we will take into consideration in terms of matching colours.
  • The colours of the songs featured are in red, making them stand out much more compared to the artist's name for example. Again, this is something we may chose to use.
